Portuguese Bean Soup



1 cup dried red kidney beans
6 potatoes, diced
2 qts. water 
2 bay leaves
3 onions, sliced
1 tsp. ground all spice
2 cloves garlic, crushed, and minced      
1 can-(8 ozs.) tomato paste
!/4 cup bacon fat
       Salt and pepper
Put beans and water in kettle, and bring to boil. Boil 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 1 hour. Then bring again to boil and simmer, covered, 1 1/2 hours, or until beans are tender. Cook onions and garlic in bacon fat until lightly browned. Add with remaining ingredients, except salt and pepper, to beans Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Season Makes: 3 qts.
